Oliver: That is indeed strange and I wish I knew what happened, but I have no idea. But, at least you have a solution, now.

"Hopefully, this information will help others with their printing problems"
It *does* help. Thank you for fiddling this out.
But it's strange from my sight: I'm using 2.6.22-gentoo since a couple of weeks and printing a few pages per day. But this weired phenomenon appears yesterday (11/21/07) the first time...

Greetings from germany,
Oliver - over and out.

Bernd: I'm glad this was helpful to you, too. It's nice when a quick Google search yields you the solution to a non-obvious problem.

I had the same problem with my 2.6.18-gentoo-r2 kernel. At first i thought the update of cups was the cause of the problem, but i was in a hurry then and could not investigate further.

When i tried again today, i noticed the "DMA write timed out" messages and some google-search brought me here. Fortunately i had the parport stuff compiled as module and thus could avoid a reboot :-)

Thanks Dossy and a happy new year,
regards from Germany,
 Bernd
