I hereby give myself permission to blog

My Twitter friend Brett tweeted something that I’ve been feeling and struggling with for months and months now. Basically, that there are times where I want to say something “out loud” to my social network, but I know I’ll need more than the 140 characters that will fit in a tweet, but it doesn’t feel large enough to blog about. I end up just “eating” the thought and it never escapes my head, but it’ll bother me for days, because of that need to get it out.

So, I’d like to try a little experiment. I’m giving myself “permission” to write those thoughts out as quick, short little blog entries. I have no idea what’ll happen, but I’ve sat on my hands long enough and it’s time for a change.

  1. What a great idea. I’ve been using Tumblr the past few days, trying to ease myself back into writing longer posts. Maybe it’s not the length, but the content. That’s what’s always important to me. And I’m starting to think that a lot of people don’t quite have the patience to read longer posts now.

    • Hi, Mercy! Thanks for stopping by ;)

There’s definitely an element of “tl;dr” when it comes to blog posts, unless you’re writing something eminently useful that people will invest the time in reading. That’s why Twitter is so brilliant — it forces people to keep it short.

I just can’t get into Tumblr … it seems like most of them are just girls hot-linking images from across the web, like a weird bookmarking service. I’d rather have stuff on my blog, in case Tumblr goes down (again) or eventually gets bought by some company that will let it stagnate and eventually kill it off …

  2. It’s a good idea! I used Tumblr for that for a while. :)

    • Yeah, I tried – just haven’t been able to get “into” using Tumblr or Posterous – but, I just realized they both do have a “post by email” capability, so maybe I’ll give them a try. But, honestly, I’d rather have everything really all funnel into the blog, where I still own and control the data, rather than it sitting out on some service that might lose it, etc.
